The present thesis deals with professional education of technical level in São Paulo State of proved political, economic and educational leadership in Brazil. Such attributes connect the paulista technical school to the privileged conditions of the state and the productive sector, derived from the specificity of its teaching. In the present research a Escola Técnica Estadual Paulino Botelho (ETE) has been chosen as the object of study. It is located in the scientific technological regional pole of São Carlos and is currently integrated with the public system administered by Centro Estadual de Educação Tecnológica Paula Souza (CEETEPS). The specific aim of this research is to answer the question about the contradictions and theoretical practical limits present in the organizational and cultural space of the school as well as the visible effects upon the educative practice that qualifies the institutional identity understood as the social function to fit young students and adults for the several areas and technical courses. By means of qualitative and quantitative data obtained from primary sources, such as testimonies, questionnaires and analysis of the data of administrative books, it is possible to conclude that the identity of the individualized school is jeopardized by the confrontation between what is proposed by the regulating documents of professional education, with principles and general objectives idealized and the reality revealed by the deficiency of material and educational conditions of daily teaching, proved by the internal study of the technical teaching institution.
